Addiction Severity Index ‐ Multimedia Version Connect expands reach

Newton, MA – February 9, 2009‐‐Inflexxion Inc. today announced the publication of a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)‐ funded study validating the Spanish language version of ASI‐MV® Connect, a Web‐enabled system for fast, secure self‐administered addiction assessments.

The system, developed to bring the benefits of the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) assessment to more people, includes three components: the client self‐administered ASI‐MV interview; clinical reports populated with client‐specific data; and a powerful Internet‐based data analysis tool, the ASI‐MV Connect Data Center.

The study, “Validation of the Spanish Addiction Severity Index Multimedia Version (S‐ASI‐MV),” was authored by Stephen F. Butler, José Pedro Redondo, Kathrine C. Fernandez, and Albert Villapiano. It appears in Drug and Alcohol Dependence (January 2009, Volume 99, 18‐27).

“The ASI has arguably become the standard assessment for substance abuse, and it is increasingly mandated of clinics. Yet, to our knowledge, there has not been a widely accepted or validated Spanish language version,” says Villapiano, a co‐author of the study and the Vice President of Clinical Development at Inflexxion. “Clinicians have been translating the ASI ‘on the fly,’ which raises questions about the reliability and validity of the ASI data being collected.”With the Spanish language ASI‐MV Connect, clinicians have an instrument that has been shown to be both valid and reliable.

According to the study, it performs psychometrically as well or better than an interviewer version, shows good test‐retest reliability, and was accepted without a single report of rejection or confusion from the study participants.

Creating a Spanish language version of ASI‐MV Connect is part of Inflexxion’s strategy of continuously developing new features to make the assessment process more efficient and cost‐effective for clinics, while helping to improve the quality of care for clients.

“The ASI‐MV Connect system is designed to increase cost‐effectiveness while ensuring the consistency and quality of assessments,” explains Villapiano. “Since the ASI‐MV interviews are self‐administered, organizations are able to assess more clients without necessarily adding more staff. With research‐validated interviews in both English and Spanish, there’s no need to dedicate Spanish‐speaking clinicians to assess clients who speak Spanish. Our clinical reports are immediately available to clinicians, automatically populated with the relevant data from the interviews. Finally, with the ASI‐MV Connect Data Center, administrators can gather accurate data about the population they serve for strategic planning, program development, and grant submissions ‐‐ without the time and expense of collecting, cleaning, and organizing data from multiple systems or sites.”
